I Feel Helpless....and Exhausted
What in the world can you do for a 3 year old with a cough??? I asked this of the pharmacist earlier this evening and was basically told, "nothing, just lots of fluids and try a humidifier." Ugh. Allary's cough is so yucky and nasty and frequent that we are both miserable. Neither of us are sleeping well. I've tried everything, every home remedy I've heard of... a humidifier, a spoonful of honey before bed, Vicks vapor rub on her chest and even on the bottoms of her feet. I'm scared to death to give her any cough medicine because of the newest restrictions and freaky news reports. I scoured the store for anything to treat a cough for children under six and came up empty. What do I do???

Have you tried those vapor plug in night lights. We use the Pediacare nightlights and plug ins and they really help Jacob, I'm not sure if they helped Ally or not, but it wouldn't hurt to try. I like the smell of the Pediacare ones better than the Vicks. The Vicks on the bottoms of the feet seemed to help Ally, but it sounds like you've already tried that. The only other thing I can think of is trying to get her to sleep propped up on pillows or putting something under her mattress to prop it up so that the mucus doesn't build up so bad. Good luck! Colds are miserable for everyone and they seem to drag on forever!!!
Basically everything you and Dena said. My friend is a great pediatrician and we have had many conversations about this. Her comment on the medicine was not so much that it is harmful, but it is ineffetive for babies and small children. We are just getting over all of that as well...good luck. It's hard to see your kids be sick.
Oh, you can try giving her Benadryl to at least help her sleep. It is safe and helped Preston.
